The Nick Toth is coming up quickly. It is very important that you get your US Fencing membership updated if you've not done that yet. Although we will have US Fencing membership forms at the Nick Toth so that you'll be able to join, pay, and fence if you're not a member, we would prefer that you take care of this before the competition. You can join online and print out your membership card.

It is also very important for you to confirm your rating is correct on the US Fencing web site which you can find here:

Please remember that your rating on askFRED.net is not official, the ratings on the US Fencing web site are. We will be using the ratings as they are listed on the US Fencing web on the day of the Nick Toth. If your ratings are not correct, you'll need to get them fixed ASAP.

Updating your US Fencing membership and confirming your ratings will help the Nick Toth run smoother for the betterment of all involved. If you have questions or need to contact the bout committee you can email me at

Iris Zimmermann holds the distinction of being the first U.S. fencer in history to win a world championship in any weapon or any age category. She earned this distinction in 1995, winning the World Under-17 Championships at her first major international event. Four years later Iris would become the first US fencer to medal in the Senior World Championships, earning the bronze medal in women’s foil.

She and her sister Felicia formed a great fencing duo. In that same year Felicia was the number one ranked Women’s Foil Fencer in FIE Junior World Cup Points.

Today US fencing fans take medals at the Cadet and Junior World Championships as a given. We now don’t hope for a medal, but expect them and want to count up how many golds the US team takes in comparison to the traditional powers such as Italy, France, Germany, etc.

The efforts of fencers like Iris Zimmermann and others in her generation of US team members set the bar higher for future US teams. In only 15 years the US fencing community has moved from being in awe of European fencing to looking at how the US matches up in every weapon.

Iris is still involved in fencing as the co-owner of the Rochester Fencing Center, where she began her fencing career, working to inspire and teach a new generation of fencers.

Entry Fee: $35 fee per event - included with fee is an event t-shirt - register on askfred then pay on the day of the competition. Please make checks payable to AFAAA. (If a fencer wants to fence in 2 events, 2 checks are required). Separate registration for each event is required. Please register on ASKFRED

USFA RULES
All USFA rules will be enforced in the tournament. Please bring proof of USFA membership or you will not be allowed to compete. New USFA membership applications will be available at the tournament.

COMPETITION FORMAT
Standard USFA pool format with 100 percent advancing to direct elimination with no repechage.

Massialas, Merza Lead U.S. Fencers into Singapore

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Five teenage American fencers will board a plane for Singapore for the 2010 Youth Olympic Games, Aug. 14-26. Head Coach Sergey Isayenko leads the U.S. delegation into the fencing venue, the International Convention Centre. Fencers aged 15-17 will compete in boys and girl’s epee, foil and saber from Aug. 15-18. There will also be a mixed team competition featuring boys and girls in all weapons.

Team USA includes:

Katharine Holmes (Washington, D.C.) - Women’s Epee

Alexander Massialas (San Francisco, Calif.) - Men’s Foil

Celina Merza (Wayne, N.J.) - Women’s Saber

Mona Shaito (Garland, Texas) - Women’s Foil

Will Spear (Wyantskill, N.Y.) - Men’s Saber

“It is a great honor both to have qualified and to be able to represent the United States, competing in the first ever Youth Olympic Games,” Holmes said. “I am really looking forward to meeting all the other athletes in Singapore. It should be an amazing experience.”

The U.S. did not qualify a spot in the men’s epee competition. Lee Kiefer (Lexington, Ky.) qualified for women’s foil but is unable to fence due to school obligations. The 16-year-old Shaito was the first alternate. The fencers qualified during the Junior/Cadet World Championships in Baku, Azerbaijan.

“I have dreamed about the Olympics since I was 7 years old,” Merza said. “The Youth Olympic Games give me an opportunity to live a part of my dream and I’m even more determined to continue to strive to make it to the Olympics in the future. I am excited about meeting new people and hope to return with a medal, making this experience an even more unforgettable one.”

All five American fencers competed in the U.S. Fencing Summer National Championships in Atlanta, Ga., July 4-13. Massialas won the Division 1 national championship and finished second in the Senior Team Foil event. Spear and his teammates from Manhattan Fencing won the Under 19 Team Saber national championship. Spear won the silver medal in Under 19 individual saber and took bronze in Senior Team saber.

“Being able to participate in the first ever Youth Olympics and representing my country is an incredible honor and experience I will never forget,” Shaito said.

Merza won two silver medals at Summer Nationals, competing with Bergen Fencing Club in the Senior and Under 19 team saber events. Holmes placed 10th in Under 19 epee and 17th in Division 1 epee. Shaito earned a silver medal in Under 16 foil and a bronze medal in Under 19 foil.

Video Highlights of the 2010 European Championships

The 2010 European Fencing Championships drew to a close today with the final team events.
Italy was the big winner with gold medals in Men’s Team Foil, Men’s Foil, Women’s Foil, Women’s Team Foil, and Men’s Team Sabre.
Individual event winners included: Andrea Baldini, Valentina Vezzali, Alexey Yakimenko, Imke Duplitzer, Svetlana Kormilitsyna, and Jean-Michel Lucenay.
Team events were won by Italy (Men’s and Women’s Foil and Men’s Sabre), Poland (Women’s Epee), Ukraine (Women’s Sabre), and Hungary (Men’s Sabre).
The medal winners received another perk when Alisher Usmanov, President of the International Fencing Confederation (FIE), donated $100,000 in prize money. Max Geuter (Secretary General of the European Fencing Federation), confirmed that all new European Champions will achieve $6,000, silver medalists will gain $4,000 and bronze medalists will receive $3,000.
